Development Shapes Evolution
Article Abstract:
Research on the neck vertebrae of mammals and on cockroach reproduction were presented at the Evolution '99 conference. Mammals have maintained a seven-vertebra neck for millions of years of evolution, and one researcher proposed that a developmental constraint limits any changes in neck vertebrae. An African cockroach is one of the few organisms to reproduce asexually, and a researcher reported that asexual reproduction is a difficult road for species.

Did Cooked Tubers Spur the Evolution of Big Brains?
Article Abstract:
A new anthropological theory proposes that the ability to cook tubers rather than meat-eating played a primary role in human evolution. Supporters of the theory maintain that cooked tubers were responsible for the increase in human brain size that occurred 1.8 million years ago. Gathering and cooking tubers may also have altered human behavior.

Are Our Primate Cousins `Conscious'?
Article Abstract:
The question over how conscious primates are in human terms has been a favorite and difficult topic of primate research. Researchers are designing new ways to test primates for awareness of self and others, the ability to overcome instinctive behavior, and understanding that others have mental states and thoughts.
